What Is Palantir AIP? A Deeper Look
Not affiliated with Palantir Technologies Inc. This page is an independent explainer based on publicly available sources. See our main explainer on what Palantir does for a shorter overview.
AIP — Palantir's Artificial Intelligence Platform — is the newest of Palantir's four core products, and the one the company has leaned on most heavily for growth since its 2023 launch.
What makes AIP different from a typical AI chatbot
Most consumer AI tools answer questions using general knowledge. AIP is built to do something different: connect large language models directly to an organization's own live operational data — through Foundry or Gotham — so an AI system can act on real records rather than generic information. Palantir describes this as enabling "decision intelligence," where AI agents can take approved actions directly inside a company's existing systems: updating an order, routing a financial transaction for approval, or flagging a gap in a patient's medical record, rather than just describing what should happen next.
How it fits with Palantir's other products
AIP doesn't replace Foundry or Gotham — it sits on top of them, alongside the Ontology (the structured data layer we cover on our dedicated Ontology page) and Apollo (the deployment infrastructure covered on our main "what does Palantir do" page). Palantir has positioned AIP as a way to give businesses one integrated platform instead of a patchwork of separate AI tools that need to be stitched together and maintained independently.
Real use cases
Reporting on customer deployments describes AIP being used for dynamic scheduling problems (adjusting flight schedules, routing trains, managing healthcare provider calendars), streamlining commercial underwriting by integrating live portfolio-risk data, sales and marketing workflows like lead triage, and procurement tasks such as identifying cost-saving opportunities and automating negotiation strategies. Palantir has stated it uses AIP internally as well, including for managing its own contracts.
Who's actually using it
AIP's customer base spans defense, national governments, and large industrial companies. Rio Tinto — covered in more detail on our dedicated partnership page — extended its Palantir relationship specifically to add AIP access in a 2024 contract renewal, on top of its existing Foundry deployment.
The AIP Bootcamp, as a sales and onboarding tool
Much of AIP's commercial rollout has happened through a specific format Palantir calls the AIP Bootcamp — a short, hands-on session where a customer builds a real application using their own data alongside Palantir engineers. We've given this its own dedicated explainer, since it's become a distinctive and heavily used part of how Palantir brings new AIP customers on board.
