Who Founded Palantir?

Palantir Technologies was founded in 2003 by Peter Thiel, Alex Karp, and a small founding team, starting out by building software for the U.S. intelligence community focused on counterterrorism investigations.
Peter Thiel
Peter Thiel is best known as a co-founder of PayPal, where the company had faced a costly credit card fraud problem — reportedly losing more than $10 million a month at one point. The pattern-detection techniques developed to fight that fraud at PayPal are widely cited as part of the technical thinking that carried over into Palantir's early approach to identifying suspicious activity in large datasets. Thiel has remained closely associated with Palantir's strategic direction and investor base since founding, including through Founders Fund, the venture firm he co-founded.
Alex Karp
Alex Karp has served as Palantir's chief executive officer since the company's founding. Unlike many Silicon Valley CEOs, Karp holds a PhD in philosophy (from Goethe University Frankfurt) rather than a computer science or engineering background, and he has been publicly vocal about Palantir's positioning as a company willing to work closely with Western militaries and governments — describing this alignment as central to the company's mission rather than incidental to it.
Early funding: In-Q-Tel
One of Palantir's earliest and most notable sources of funding was In-Q-Tel, the venture capital arm of the CIA, created specifically to invest in technology useful to U.S. intelligence agencies. For several years in Palantir's early history, U.S. government and intelligence agencies made up the large majority of its customer base, before the company began expanding into commercial markets.
From founding to today
Palantir spent its first years focused almost entirely on government and intelligence customers, gradually building out a commercial business (via its Foundry platform) as the company matured. Palantir went public via a direct listing on the New York Stock Exchange on September 30, 2020, and has since become one of the more closely watched — and more debated — public companies in the data-analytics and defense-technology space.
