What Is a Forward Deployed Engineer?

A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) is a Palantir-specific job title — and one of the roles the company is best known for in tech hiring circles. FDEs are software engineers who work directly at or with a customer's site, using Palantir's platforms (Foundry, Gotham, AIP) to build custom, end-to-end solutions for that specific customer's problems, rather than working purely on Palantir's internal product codebase.
How it differs from a standard software engineer role
A traditional Software Engineer (SWE) at Palantir focuses primarily on building and scaling the core products themselves, largely working internally. An FDE instead combines engineering work with a client-facing, almost consulting-style role: understanding a customer's operational problem, then rapidly building and adapting software on top of Palantir's platform to solve it. This mix of deep technical work and direct customer interaction is what distinguishes the FDE title from equivalent engineering roles at most other software companies.
What the day-to-day involves
Based on accounts from current and former Palantir engineers, FDE work typically involves being embedded with a specific customer team, learning that customer's data, workflows, and pain points, then building tailored applications and data pipelines to address them — sometimes involving foreign or domestic travel to customer sites, depending on the specific placement and client. The role draws on a blend of software engineering, data engineering, and a degree of solution architecture and stakeholder management.
Where the title fits in Palantir's hiring pipeline
FDE (and its close variant, Forward Deployed Software Engineer, or FDSE) has become one of Palantir's most talked-about roles in the tech job market, partly because of its distinctiveness and partly because of its reputation for a demanding hiring process — covered in more detail on our separate page about Palantir's interview process. Reported hiring timelines for the role tend to run longer than average: Glassdoor data covering thousands of submitted interviews puts Palantir's overall average hiring process at around 29 days, with Forward Deployed Engineering roles specifically noted as among the slower ones to fill.
